SBISD earns School FIRST “Superior” rating

For the 10th consecutive year, Spring Branch ISD has earned the highest possible rating of Superior Achievement from the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST).

The district rating is based on data reported for the 2010-2011 school year. SBISD received the FIRST system’s highest possible score of 70. To win this top ranking, the district received a perfect score in every possible category.

In 2001, the Texas Legislature created the School FIRST system, which includes 20 financial indicators to rate compliance by both public school districts and open-enrollment charter schools on financial standards, including financial management practices and management of financial resources.

SBISD Associate Superintendent of Finance Karen Wilson presented financial data and information on this year’s district School FIRST rating at the Oct. 22 Board of Trustees meeting. A public hearing was also conducted.

Hurricane Researcher

Hurricane researcher and meteorologist Shirley Murillo will be the featured keynote speaker next week at the Spring Branch ISD middle school. Murillo studies hurricanes for a living with the Hurricane Research Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

She will speak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Spring Oaks Middle School Auditorium. The school is located at 2150 Shadowdale, one block west of the intersection of Gessner and Hammerly Boulevard in Spring Branch. The public is encouraged to attend this timely talk about hurricanes and related issues.

During her Nov. 13 visit to Spring Branch ISD, Murillo will also visit several district secondary campuses and discuss hurricanes with students and teachers. The NOAA researcher’s visit is being hosted in SBISD through the JASON Project, which is generously funded through a special grant from Chevron.

The NOAA is a federal agency focused on the condition of the oceans and the atmosphere. From weather forecasts to severe storm warnings and climate monitoring to fisheries management, NOAA uses cutting-edge research and high-tech instrumentation to provide local citizens and decision makers at every level with the best and most reliable information possible.
