SBISD In the Press: Program Honors SBISD Mentors

Reposted from the Houston Chronicle

Robin Jacobs was a shy sixth-grader at Spring Wood Middle School, scared to try new things and unaware of her potential, when she was paired with Marguerite Baldwin, a volunteer mentor with the fledgling Impact mentoring program. Now a sophomore at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Jacobs said Baldwin was a constant presence in her life throughout middle and high school. Her mentor motivated her and pushed her to do well in school and dream big, she said.

"You always need that one person who is not in your family or group of friends who will push you, but not judge you," Jacobs said. "She made me realize I could do anything I wanted to do and open up to all the possibilities." Jacobs was one of several former students whose testimony lauded the Spring Branch school district's mentoring program at a special event Nov. 1 at the Omni Houston Hotel to celebrate its 10th anniversary and honor those who started and developed the program.

SBISD in the Press: District Awarded Gates Grant

Reposted from the Houston Chronicle:

The Spring Branch school district won a $2.1 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of a program that encourages collaboration between traditional school districts and charter schools, officials announced Wednesday.

Spring Branch ISD, which created two schools in partnership with the KIPP and YES charter schools this year, joins seven other Gates winners: Boston; Denver; Hartford, Conn.; New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia. Relationships between traditional public schools and charters, which are publicly financed but privately operated, are often fraught, with neighborhood schools seeing charters as rivals for money and the most motivated students.

SBISD in the Press: SBISD Partners with KIPP and YES Prep

Reposted from the Houston Chronicle

Erik Schmidt, principal of the new KIPP Courage College Prep school within Landrum Middle School, was caught off-guard by the number of applicants seeking to enroll their children in his program for the fall.

One of two new programs that had summer school this year through a partnership between Spring Branch school district and the KIPP and YES charter schools, Schmidt's school, which is at Landrum, 2200 Ridgecrest, met its goal to enroll 105 fifth-graders.

The students were chosen through a lottery open for application from throughout the district. The school has a waiting list of more than 50 families.

"I'm humbled," said Schmidt, whose school will add a grade each year to eventually teach children in grades 5-8. "We are new in this community, and the parents have shown courage to believe in us."

SBISD in the Press: Legislators Advocate Reform

Reposted from the Houston Chronile by Annette Baird

Two local legislators representing parts of Spring Branch Independent School District say public education will be a top priority as they go into the legislative session in January.

However, while concerns over testing may be addressed, school funding is likely to be put on the back burner while challenges to the current system make their way through the courts.

"We have to put that aside until the court cases are resolved and hope the court rules with some kind of clarity, then set a system to ensure it works," said state Rep. Jim Murphy, a Republican representing District 133.
