4A UIL Champs and State Swim Results

Congratulations to the Stratford Boys' Swim Team, back-to-back State 4A UIL Champions!  Pictured: Coaches Mike Hoscovic and Jaime Denton celebrate with the team. After a season described by head swim coach Mike Hoskovec as long and wild, the Stratford High men’s swimming team successfully defended its Class 4A state title on Saturday. Going into the state meet held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin, Hoskovec said that Frisco Wakeland had the early upper hand with a 50-point margin if all state swimmers medaled as predicted, based on their individual seeding.

The Spartans, however, rose to the challenge. With only the freestyle relay left to swim, Stratford had a 172-171 point advantage. With relay scoring giving 40 points for first place, 34 for second place, and 32 for third place, the situation was set for the final event race: The winner of the 400 freestyle relay would be the state champion!

Guthrie Center students spark dialogue with peers as part of No Place for Hate campaign

Each year the Guthrie Center campus participates in the Anti-Defamation League’s NO PLACE FOR HATE campaign to boost awareness of diversity and recognize bias on school campuses.
This year NPFH organizer Tina Miller worked with film practicum instructor Patty Nilsson and student Grayson Blackburn to produce videos around the concept that can be used in classroom discussions.

The Guthrie Center offers students real-world learning opportunities as part of Career and Technology course work.

Touring TSU

About 100 students from four Spring Branch ISD schools visited Texas Southern University in February as part of a district Health Fitness Department special initiative.

Students in the Advanced Movers Initiative at Landrum and Spring Woods Middle schools and Pine Shadows and Westwood elementary schools visited TSU on Feb. 16 along with numerous campus coaches, school counselors and teacher volunteers.

The special initiative supports the district’s T-2-4 goal to double the number of our graduates by 2017 who earn a technical certificate, a two-year degree, or four-year degree.

In all, 104 children attended the visit to the historical African-American college. During their visit, students toured the TSU recreation and student center, student dorms and local campus museum.

They also observed men’s and women’s basketball games. Some students took part in free throw basketball shooting and other contests.

“This was great exposure for our students and a great investment in their future,” said Westwood Elementary Health Fitness instructor Sam Karnes.

“Many of these students have never set foot in a college arena, yet alone a college campus, so this was a great post-secondary opportunity for all 104 of our students. It is another step in a positive direction towards achievement.”
