Houston Texans’ Mascot Toro Comes to Westwood Elementary

On Friday, January 31st, 345 Westwood Elementary school students filled the school cafeteria for a presentation by Houston Texans’ mascot, Toro, titled “Toro Shoots for the STAAR.”

The presentation included video footage from voice of the Texans Marc Vandeermer, Texans center Chris Myers, safety Danieal Manning and two Texans cheerleaders.  All the while, Toro presented students with interactive tips and strategies to help students “tackle” not only the upcoming STAAR test, but widespread academic success.

Students learned about preparing their bodies and minds for academic challenges in the same way athletes prepare for sporting events. Toro taught them about the importance of exercise and nutrition as well as getting the recommended amount of sleep each night.

Westwood Elementary Principal Kay Kennard addressed the students about the importance of Toro’s words noting, “This is not just about one test, but being prepared to learn and be your best every single day.”

The event was sponsored by First Community Credit Union (FCCU), a longstanding Spring Branch ISD Good Neighbor. Established in 1954 to serve the employees of SBISD, FCCU has since expanded to become one of the largest credit unions in Houston. FCCU was part of the inaugural class of 55 Good Neighbors in 2006 and has continued to partner with the district each year to provide valuable educational resources and opportunities for our teachers, students and schools.

Thank you to FCCU and The Houston Texans for providing our students with important tips and strategies to maintaining academic and personal success!
