A Day of Caring in SBISD - United Way and ConocoPhillips

Not even the threat of a little rain could put a damper on the smiles or activity of the approximately 20 volunteers from ConocoPhillips who turned out to invest their time and goodwill at the Spring Branch Spring Branch Education Center (SBEC) as part of the 2013 United Way Day of Caring campaign.  View Photo Gallery >>



Volunteers from both organizations rolled up their sleeves constructing flower, vegetable and herb planter boxes, access ramps and toddler-sized picnic tables as part of a beautification/landscaping project at the campus.

The Day of Caring Campaign, an annual initiative organized by the United Way, matches corporate volunteers with groups or organizations in need, providing an opportunity for participants to see firsthand how their support is making a positive change in their local community. This year, SBEC's Bright Beginnings Childcare Center was matched with ConocoPhillips thanks to coordination of Dennis Wells, J.J. Oshins and Center Director, Trinidad Rivera.

The Center offers students enrolled in SBISD with children a solution for childcare while they attend class. The Center ensures students are able to stay on track with their education, while providing care and early childhood learning opportunities for their children.

Center Director Trinidad Rivera and staffers were thrilled to witness the changes taking place before their eyes as volunteers worked to install the new features as part of the day's project. As planting wrapped up, Center students joined the volunteers to test out picnic tables and share in an impromptu learning session about the newly planted flowers, herb and vegetables.

Like the promise of a bountiful harvest from this newly planted garden, the investment made by ConocoPhillips and United Way at SBEC through the Bright Beginning Center is one that will have long-lasting positive impacts in our community.
