SBISD Fine Arts seasonal productions announced

Three district high schools will open 2014 with modern musicals that reach as far back as Shakespeare’s most famous love story and as near as one of America’s most popular, recent animated films. On stage or in performance, offerings this winter and spring in Spring Branch ISD are ambitious ones in theater, choir, orchestra and band.

In theater, Stratford and Memorial high schools will open the season with performances, respectively, of the timeless romance of Tony and Maria in West Side Story, and the story and songs of a benign ogre in Shrek The Musical. Spring Woods High will present the musical State Fair early this year.

The Stratford Playhouse cast’s revival of the classic musical West Side Story recreates the romance, the passion, the energy and the enthusiasm of star-crossed lovers from the rival “Jets” and “Sharks” gangs of New York’s 1950s West Side neighborhood. The famous play’s love story is patterned after a one of literature’s best – Romeo and Juliet.

Memorial High’s adaptation of the 2001 Tony-nominated film Shrek is considered by many to be one of the best movie-to-musical adaptations in recent stage history. Spring Woods High’s Safari Players will join the musical parade with State Fair, which chronicles a farm family’s visit to the Iowa State Fair during the 1940s. The parents set their sights on winning blue ribbons. Their children focus on finding love on the midway.

All three high school productions will support large casts and include outreach efforts to elementary audiences, in many cases. Advance tickets can be purchased online or through the following campus box offices:
