March is Youth Art Month – Find inspiration. Find a connection!
March is Youth Art Month, a national program designed to emphasize the value of art and art education for all children. This year's theme, "Art Builds Bridges", conveys the power of art to inspire and transform learning experiences for students, educators, families and the community. Spring Branch showcases student artwork year-round, including recently announced Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Winners, a current showcase at the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum (AYAM) and expanding campus participation supporting the upcoming Houston Art Car Parade in April. Students, educators and families are benefiting from the bridges built by creating, sharing and enjoying art.Sunday Supper by Erica Kim |
While the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLS&R) celebrated the close of its 2015 season, area cowboys and girls can extend their rodeo experiences by visiting HLS&R’s online gallery of winning student artwork. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s School Art Program, started in 1964, now has more than 300,000 entries each year. Student artists submit projects based on Western culture, history or heritage. Selected works are auctioned off during the rodeo season, guaranteeing each young artist $1,000 or more in scholarships. Congratulations to all student art winners and champions honored this year by the HLS&R’s scholarship program!
A Student Spring Art Show & A New Mural @AYAM
Plan a trip to the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum (AYAM) and kick-off your Youth Art Month activities! AYAM celebrates student art in two outstanding shows and, also, in a recently completed mural by regional artist Daniel Anguilu. It’s a great time to visit one of our area’s best kept venues for art and cultural study, the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum. Artwork representing SBISD student artists in grades K-12 during the Spring Art Show is now on display, showcasing a range of the district's art curriculum from the creative minds and talents of our students. All staff, family, friends and art lovers are welcome. Visit the AYAM website for more details and show hours. (AYAM: 901 Yorkchester, Houston, Texas 77079)
Academy of Choice students working on art car Iron Dragon |
Next month, students and educators from SBISD’s Academy of Choice will participate in the 2015 Houston Art Car Parade. Their entry, Iron Dragon, is an artful culmination of months of work and years of dedication. The right combination of people, programming and personal motivation has produced amazing results. Campus educators Kim Hopson and Jackie Valore, AOC Artcar Club members and professional regional artists will cross the bridge between the classroom and local art community when the Iron Dragon hits the streets on its parade route through Houston. Benefitting from mentoring and hands-on guidance and support by area artists, this collaboration is one example of how project-based learning has a real and lasting impact on the student learning experience. Read more about AOC’s Iron Dragon.
Visit the 2015 Art Car Parade website.
