Meadow Wood Celebrates Red Ribbon Week Differently

Red ribbons and #SBGoRed selfies are showing up as SBISD schools celebrate Red Ribbon Week – a time to learn and be aware of the dangers of drugs.

Red Ribbon Week is a fun way to promote good character, and Meadow Wood Elementary always participates in a fun dress-up days. This year, students and staff at Meadow Wood Elementary wore pajamas as one of their campus activities, something a bit different than the traditional superhero attire seen as part of their annual celebration.

“Post-Harvey families have so much going on with rebuilding and commuting that we did not want to add anything extra by asking them to shop for themed days,” said MDE parent Jenaye Gardner. “Our week became simpler by asking kids to wear clothing they may already have in their closet.”

On Monday, students wore red to kick off the week. Tuesday was crazy hair day. Wednesday was pajama day. Thursday the school’s PTA provided students with mustaches and promoted the tagline “we MUSTACHE you to build a strong foundation.” And on Friday, students donned MWE spirit wear.

The campus also had Inspire Rockwall on-site Thursday and Friday to reinforce their rebuilding theme. Students cheered each other on as they worked to climb the mountain, an apt metaphor for what many in the Houston area continue to do in the months following Harvey’s flooding.

“This is always an inspiring event. Watching the children encourage each other this year means so much more because of Harvey,” said Gardner. “We are all climbing different mountains, but our MWE family is blessed to have the support of our fellow students, friends, family, and staff to reach the top. It takes a village, and we are blessed that Mrs. Haynes, Mrs. Barry, Mrs. Luberger, Mrs. Oxner and the rest of the MWE staff are a part of ours.”

As the week’s activities close and students return to their routine, the lessons learned will remain. For Meadow Wood, this year’s Red Ribbon Week was about keeping kids safe and on the pathway to success. This year was different, and so was the approach to celebrating it.

This difference, and finding inspiration in it and those around you, may just be the biggest lesson for Meadow Wood and the surrounding community, one that will be remembered for years to come.
