Students in the Advanced Movers Initiative at Landrum and Spring Woods Middle schools and Pine Shadows and Westwood elementary schools visited TSU on Feb. 16 along with numerous campus coaches, school counselors and teacher volunteers.
The special initiative supports the district’s T-2-4 goal to double the number of our graduates by 2017 who earn a technical certificate, a two-year degree, or four-year degree.
In all, 104 children attended the visit to the historical African-American college. During their visit, students toured the TSU recreation and student center, student dorms and local campus museum.
They also observed men’s and women’s basketball games. Some students took part in free throw basketball shooting and other contests.
“This was great exposure for our students and a great investment in their future,” said Westwood Elementary Health Fitness instructor Sam Karnes.
“Many of these students have never set foot in a college arena, yet alone a college campus, so this was a great post-secondary opportunity for all 104 of our students. It is another step in a positive direction towards achievement.”
