Lone Star Leadership Academy

Former Meadow Wood Elementary School fifth-grader Jack Pannagl was chosen to attend the Lone Star Leadership Academy based on his demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, teacher recommendation and involvement in school and community activities, the nonprofit group called Education in Action reports.

During last spring and this summer, delegations of students chosen for this group met to develop leadership skills while learning more about Texas. Significant venues visited included the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas. Leadership Academy students also visited Texas Legislature offices, The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the Alamo in San Antonio, NASA and Moody Gardens, among other significant sites.

Speakers talked to students about career and intern opportunities, too. Students discussed what they learned together, problem solved, and simulated decision-making events, among activities. More than 1,000 Texas students took part in Leadership Academy activities last year, the group reports.

Students involved in student government, service organizations, and gifted and talented programs are especially good candidates for Lone Star Leadership Academy camps. Educators may nominate outstanding students in fourth- through eighth-grade for 2014 camps online at www.educationinaction.org. Facilitator/student ratio is 1-10 and all facilitators are Texas educators.
