Heading back to class can be a stressful time when faced with making new friends, attending a new school or simply planning for the the changes that come with the start of a new year. A recent lesson in viewpoint in Meadow Wood Elementary Art Specialist Debbie Guelzow's art class helped students focus on their personal strengths, while empowering them to be innovative problem solvers.
Fourth-graders in Guelzow's class took time during the first week of class to study the self-portrait. Their lesson focused on Picasso and the theory of Cubism. Students applied their learning by creating self-portrait masks in oil pastels. By flexing their creative muscles, students were able to expand their self awareness and turn perceived differences into personal strengths.
