Spring Forest Middle Will Honor Veterans

Veterans attending last year's annual Veterans Day Celebration

The 15th annual celebration at Spring Forest Middle School for veterans and their families will be held 8-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with a breakfast and full program. For details, contact Jana Gwinn at 713.251.4618 or visit www.sfmspta.com.

Spring Forest Middle School students and staff will honor those who have served our nation during the school’s 15th annual Veterans Day Celebration. This year’s featured speaker is John McLeod. He served during the Cold War-era with Navy submarine hunters.

This year’s Veterans Day event will be held 8-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Spring Forest Middle School is located at 14240 Memorial Drive, about a half mile east of Dairy Ashford. Please turn north on Fern to access the campus and parking.

Family, friends and neighbors who have served in the military services are invited to this celebration, which begins at 8 a.m. with a breakfast for veterans and family members followed by a 9 a.m. school-wide program.

Since its beginning as a small campus gathering, Spring Forest Middle’s breakfast and morning program for area veterans and their families has grown into a praised and cherished community event in West Houston. Area dignitaries are expected to attend this year’s event and may include U.S. Rep. John Culberson and Texas Rep. Jim Murphy. This year’s sponsor, Heritage Texas Real Estate, will be honored for its years of support.

This year, the middle school’s related service project involves raising funds for the Texas A&M chapter of Patriot Paws, a student-run group that helps to train service dogs for wounded veterans. Chapter volunteers will attend the Veterans Day event, along with a service dog. So far, Spring Forest Middle students have raised $6,500 for Patriot Paws.

Organizers with Operation Interdependence, a group which ships food gifts across the globe, will also attend. Spring Forest Middle students and families in recent years have donated thousands of items for gift boxes. The PTA and school have raised $3,000 for the group last year.

Navy Veteran John McLeod of Houston will speak to students across the Houston area on behalf of the Joe Foss Institute. To learn more, visit www.joefossinstitute.org.
