Both the Girls and Boys Soccer Teams at Spring Woods
High School are headed today, April 11, to the first day’s round of the 4A
Region III Soccer Tournament. The region tournament marks the first time in
SBISD athletic history that two soccer teams from one high school have moved
forward together to the regional soccer tournament.
Spring Woods High Girls will play College Station at
4 p.m. today at Turner Stadium and the Tigers Boys will meet Jacksonville in
Turner Stadium at 11 a.m. today. For this historic occasion, up to 1,000 Spring
Woods High students will attend one or more soccer games with bus
transportation provided by the high school administration.
In light of their achievement, both teams will be
recognized by TV Channel 57, The Cube, as the station’s High School Teams of
The Week.
“This team has achieved tremendous success this
season,” Boys Coach Wadey Yaya told the TV station yesterday during an
interview. “The chemistry of these boys is that they do not want to see this
winning season end.” The Boys team is 18-4 in soccer play so far.
“It’s a dream come true for us,” said Girls Coach
Maggie Fuchs. “It’s a dream come true for the girls and boys teams both. We
knew that we could do it, and we’ve just had the time of our lives making it
happen.”
Scholar-athletes on both teams are also now in the
running for a $3,000 scholarship sponsored by the TV station and its sponsors.
They include seniors Lilly Mendoza, team center back and school valedictorian,
who will study chemical engineering at Cornell University, and Sergio Razo,
forward, who plans to attend Texas A&M University to study electrical
engineering.
Support for both teams from the community has been
overwhelming with large attendance at both home and away playoff games. Both
teams could now advance to the state tournament.
The winner of the Boys’ & Girls’ Finals game on
Saturday will advance to the UIL 4A State Soccer Tournament that will be held
at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown, Texas, on April 18-19.
The Spring Woods teams are two of six SBISD teams
that advanced to the playoffs this season. The Northbrook Boy’s & Stratford
HS Boy’s and Girl’s teams also played in one or more rounds of playoffs before
being eliminated. The Memorial HS Girl’s Soccer team advanced to the regional
quarterfinal round on Tuesday before falling to Cinco Ranch, 2-0.
