Bike Ceremony

For students at Spring Shadows Elementary School, making the Honor Roll often means more than just good grades. It means a special end of year surprise.

The Kym Coleman Education Foundation awarded 85 bikes to third- through fifth-grade students for making high grades or showing the most improvement this year during a ceremony held May 19 at the SBISD elementary on Kempwood Road.

Kym Coleman Education Foundation founder Cookie Michael helped to distribute the bikes to students who earned an average of three A’s and no more than two B’s in core academic areas by the third grading period.

One bike was also given to one child in third through fifth grade for being the Most Improved student. The foundation has sponsored a bike ceremony to reward higher student achievement for eight years at Spring Shadows, and has done the same for a decade citywide.

The Kym Coleman Foundation was founded in 1995 by Cookie Michael in honor and memory of her daughter, Kym Coleman, who died in a plane crash in 1995.

The foundation’s mission is to assist school children who are not as fortunate as others to help improve their life quality through educational incentives.

“This year, we presented 85 bikes to deserving students. We always find that this event has a large parent and family participation, and we really do appreciate that the Kym Coleman Education Foundation has done this for our schoolchildren for eight years,” Principal Jerona Williams said.
