SBISD In the Press: Program Honors SBISD Mentors

Reposted from the Houston Chronicle

Robin Jacobs was a shy sixth-grader at Spring Wood Middle School, scared to try new things and unaware of her potential, when she was paired with Marguerite Baldwin, a volunteer mentor with the fledgling Impact mentoring program. Now a sophomore at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Jacobs said Baldwin was a constant presence in her life throughout middle and high school. Her mentor motivated her and pushed her to do well in school and dream big, she said.

"You always need that one person who is not in your family or group of friends who will push you, but not judge you," Jacobs said. "She made me realize I could do anything I wanted to do and open up to all the possibilities." Jacobs was one of several former students whose testimony lauded the Spring Branch school district's mentoring program at a special event Nov. 1 at the Omni Houston Hotel to celebrate its 10th anniversary and honor those who started and developed the program.
