The Spring Branch school district won a $2.1 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of a program that encourages collaboration between traditional school districts and charter schools, officials announced Wednesday.
Spring Branch ISD, which created two schools in partnership with the KIPP and YES charter schools this year, joins seven other Gates winners: Boston; Denver; Hartford, Conn.; New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia.
Relationships between traditional public schools and charters, which are publicly financed but privately operated, are often fraught, with neighborhood schools seeing charters as rivals for money and the most motivated students.
