Erik Schmidt, principal of the new KIPP Courage College Prep school within Landrum Middle School, was caught off-guard by the number of applicants seeking to enroll their children in his program for the fall.
One of two new programs that had summer school this year through a partnership between Spring Branch school district and the KIPP and YES charter schools, Schmidt's school, which is at Landrum, 2200 Ridgecrest, met its goal to enroll 105 fifth-graders.
The students were chosen through a lottery open for application from throughout the district.
The school has a waiting list of more than 50 families.
"I'm humbled," said Schmidt, whose school will add a grade each year to eventually teach children in grades 5-8. "We are new in this community, and the parents have shown courage to believe in us."
